Palworld Fishing Guide (v1.0.4) — Rods, Bait, Best Spots, and What Actually Drops

Complete Palworld 1.0.4 fishing guide. How the minigame works, all 6 rod tiers, bait comparison, best fishing Pals, region-by-region loot tables (Palpagos / Sakurajima / Sunreach / World Tree), and how fishing pairs with Holy Water farming.

Fishing in Palworld went from "fiddly minigame most players skip" to genuinely useful in v1.0.4 (September 7, 2026). The patch tuned fishing difficulty in Sunreach and the World Tree, added on-screen minigame guides, adjusted bait success amounts, and shipped a new World Setting for tuning fish behavior. Combined with the v1.0.3 Holy Water buff — Holy Water now drops from the Large Fishing Pond — fishing is a legitimate endgame farming loop.

This guide covers the mechanic, the six rod tiers, bait choices, best fishing Pals, and what actually drops in each region so you can plan a farming run without wasting time.

Two-line summary: Craft the best rod you can (Depresso Advanced if you have the schematic), use Alluring Bait for boss-size shadows and Deluxe Bait for routine farming, bring a Pal with Fisher passive skill, and fish the World Tree area if you want Radiant Gems and Ancient Relics — Palpagos and Dark Island are fine for early materials.

How the fishing minigame actually works

Palworld's fishing minigame is Stardew Valley-adjacent: once a Pal takes the bait, you hit the Fire button to start the minigame. Your goal is to keep a green bar overlapping a yellow fish icon by holding Fire (Game8).

  • The fish moves unpredictably up and down
  • Your green bar follows the fish based on how long you hold Fire
  • The progress meter fills when the green bar overlaps the yellow icon
  • The progress meter drains when you lose contact
  • Fill the meter to catch the fish — miss too many times and it escapes

Rod size determines minigame difficulty. A larger green bar makes the minigame easier because you have more forgiveness on the tracking. Higher-tier rods = larger bar.

The 6 rod tiers (v1.0.4)

Rod progression from starter to endgame (Palworld Wiki, Gamebrief):

RodUnlockBar SizeNotes
Basic RodLevel 15SmallStarter — usable but frustrating on any fish over medium
Improved RodLevel 22Small+Modest upgrade, brief use tier
Intermediate Cattiva RodLevel 29MediumReal usability jump — this is the rod most casual players stop at
Advanced Pengullet RodLevel 45Medium+Endgame-ready for standard fishing spots
Depresso Advanced (schematic)Schematic dropLargeTop craftable tier — grind this if you're going to fish seriously
Legendary SchematicsEndgame dropsLargestCommunity-verified best tier — drops from raid bosses and late-game chests

Priority: get to the Cattiva Rod (Level 29) as soon as you can, then push straight to schematic tiers if you want to fish seriously. Skip the intermediate steps — the extra grind isn't worth it if you're going to upgrade the moment you hit the next tier anyway.

Bait comparison — which to use when

Four bait types cover the different fishing scenarios (PalMods, PalSphere):

Regular Bait — the default. Enough for early-game fishing where you don't care about optimizing rewards. Skip in mid-game onward.

High Quality Bait (Technology Level 22) — 3 Aquatic Pal Fluids + 4 Tomato + 3 Flour. Gives faster bites, so you spend less time waiting for shadows to appear. Good for high-volume routine fishing.

Deluxe Baitenlarges the green bar during the minigame, making the catch itself easier. Best all-around choice for regular farming runs where the catch difficulty is the bottleneck.

Risky Bait — high risk, high reward. Bigger rewards on successful catches, harder minigame. Best when your rod tier is high enough that the difficulty penalty doesn't matter.

Alluring Baitboth a bigger bar and better rewards. The premium option. Use when a boss-size shadow appears and you can't afford to lose it — the extra bar size buys you the catch, and the reward tier is the highest available.

Decision framework: Deluxe Bait for daily farming, Alluring Bait for the big fish, Risky Bait when you're grinding materials and have a top-tier rod.

Best fishing Pals

The single most important consideration: bring a Pal with the Fisher passive skill, which reduces the frequency of fish escaping during the minigame. This is more valuable than most base-building passives for a fishing-focused party.

Also useful:

  • Kelpsea / Kelpsea Ignis — small Pals that help spot fish shadows in the water
  • Any Water-type mount — faster travel between fishing spots (Water types swim faster than they walk)
  • Chikipi with Fisher passive — the meme choice; genuinely works for early-game fishing

For serious fishing, breed a party where at least one Pal has Fisher passive. The Trait Inheritance mechanic determines pass-through rate; the Breeding Pathfinder can find you a chain to a Fisher-passive breeder.

Region-by-region loot tables

Where you fish determines what you catch. Rough guide by region:

Palpagos Islands (starting area):

  • Standard fish (food ingredients)
  • Basic Pal Spheres from lower-tier spots
  • Best for: early-game food and starting materials
  • Skip if: you're endgame

Sakurajima:

  • Mid-tier fish
  • Bamboo, silk, and Sakurajima-specific materials
  • Occasional Pal Spheres and higher-quality schematics
  • Best for: mid-game farming while progressing the region

Sunreach islands (Soralite region):

  • Higher-quality fish and better Sphere drops
  • Soralite-adjacent materials
  • v1.0.4 fixed the fishing difficulty here — was previously punishing, now reasonable
  • Best for: mid-to-endgame material farming

The World Tree (endgame region):

  • Radiant Gems (any element, drops as loot)
  • Ancient Relics (Decayed, Dormant, Gorgeous tiers)
  • Highest-quality Pal Spheres including Legendary Sphere schematics
  • Grand Master fishing rewards including endgame materials and equipment schematics
  • v1.0.4 also fixed World Tree fishing difficulty
  • Best for: endgame farming and Awakening material grinding

Large Fishing Pond (built at your base):

  • Same tier as your base region
  • Since v1.0.3: drops World Tree Holy Water — big for Awakening Crystal crafting
  • Regenerates over time
  • Best for: passive material farming while you do other work

Fishing for Holy Water — the endgame loop

The v1.0.3 patch added Holy Water drops to fishing spots including the Large Fishing Pond. Combined with v1.0.4's difficulty adjustments in the World Tree fishing area, fishing is now a legitimate Holy Water farming route alongside beating World Tree Pals for drops.

If you're grinding Awakening Crystals (see the Awakening Guide), rotating a fishing session into your loop can materially reduce the Holy Water bottleneck without needing another combat run.

New in v1.0.4 — what changed

  • Fishing difficulty adjusted in Sunreach and World Tree areas (both previously punishing, now reasonable)
  • On-screen control guides during the minigame — helpful for new players who bounced off the mechanic
  • Warning displays and recommended equipment shown when your gear is under-tier for the spot
  • Bait success amounts adjusted per bait type — the balance between baits shifted; expect community consensus to settle over the next few weeks
  • New World Setting: "Fish Behavior During Fishing Minigames" — server admins and hosts can tune fish behavior for their group. Useful for casual servers where the minigame frustration is a barrier

Common problems

"The fish keeps escaping." Rod tier too low for the spot. Upgrade to at least Cattiva Rod (Level 29) or use Deluxe Bait to enlarge the green bar until you can craft a schematic rod.

"I can't find good fishing spots." Fast-travel to a coastal waypoint in the region you want to farm, then look for shadows in the water. World Tree fishing spots require you to progress far enough into the endgame to reach the region.

"The minigame is too hard even with a good rod." Bring a Pal with Fisher passive skill. The escape-rate reduction is more impactful than one rod tier.

"I'm not getting Holy Water from my Large Fishing Pond." Confirm your game is patched to v1.0.3 or later. Pre-1.0.3 the Pond didn't drop Holy Water at all.

"The bait recipe requires materials I don't have." High Quality Bait needs Aquatic Pal Fluids (drop from Water-type Pals). Farm a few Fuack or Celaray for Fluids before crafting.
