How to Catch Panthalus in Palworld 1.0
Panthalus is the Legendary Ocean King — a Level 70 Water-type boss that gates the entire World Tree endgame region. Everyone who wants to finish Palworld 1.0's story has to catch this one. This guide covers the full Panthalus questline, the surprisingly forgiving capture mechanic that most players don't know about, and the fastest team composition for the fight.
Quick facts
- Level 70 Water-type
- Max HP: 353,220
- Weakness: Electric (Water-type)
- Weakpoint: the jewel on its head
- Capture is guaranteed at 1 HP — any Pal Sphere works
- You MUST capture, not defeat — killing it fails the World Tree unlock quest
Prerequisites
Before you can start the Panthalus quest, you need:
- All 9 Tower Bosses defeated across Palpagos, Feybreak, and Sunreach — this is what unlocks the Panthalus questline via the Deserted Islet NPC
- Realistic level 65+ to survive the fight comfortably (Panthalus is Level 70)
- A flying mount Pal — the fight takes place over open water, so ground Pals are useless
- At least a few Ultra Pal Spheres (Legendary Spheres aren't necessary — see the capture mechanic below)
Step 1 — Get the Echoing Flute schematic
Fast-travel to the Deserted Islet at coordinates (-814, -824) — a small isolated island in the northwestern part of the map. There's a single NPC in a large hat and backpack.
Talking to them starts the Panthalus main quest and unlocks the Echoing Flute schematic in your crafting menu. This is the only way to trigger the encounter, so this step is mandatory.
Step 2 — Collect four Echobones from Ancient Whale skeletons
Once the quest starts, four golden markers appear on your world map. Each marks an Ancient Whale skeleton — enormous, unmissable structures scattered across the map. Fast-travel between them and interact with each skeleton to claim one Echobone.
You need all four Echobones to craft the flute. The skeletons don't respawn and you can only claim one bone each, so no farming required — just visit each once.
Pro tip: these are also decent screenshot opportunities. Bring a Pal that flies well for the traversal.
Step 3 — Craft the Echoing Flute
Return to your base (or any workbench that supports the recipe) and craft the Echoing Flute using your four Echobones plus the standard schematic materials. This produces the single-use summoning item you'll bring to the Deserted Islet.
Step 4 — Summon and catch Panthalus (do NOT defeat)
Return to the Deserted Islet and use the Echoing Flute. Panthalus appears over the surrounding water.
CRITICAL — read this before the fight: Panthalus cannot be defeated. Its HP is designed to bottom out at 1 point regardless of how much damage you deal. You must throw a Pal Sphere to catch it — the capture is guaranteed at that point. If you keep attacking after reaching 1 HP, the encounter is broken (the boss becomes unresponsive but doesn't drop, and the quest can't complete). Throw a Sphere as soon as its health bar bottoms out.
Because of this, any Pal Sphere tier works — Regular, Mega, Giga, Hyper, Ultra, or Legendary all have 100% catch rate at 1 HP. Save your Legendaries for wild Pals where the roll actually matters. Bring 3-5 Ultra Spheres as insurance in case something goes wrong.
The optimal fight setup
Panthalus is a huge health pool with heavy AoE water attacks. The optimal loadout:
Team
- Flying Pal to mount — non-negotiable. The fight is over open water, ground Pals are useless. Any high-speed flying Pal works; Beakons are ideal because they double as Electric-type damage dealers.
- Electric-type damage Pals — Water is weak to Electric. A team of 5 Beakons is the community consensus. If you don't have that many, mix Electric-type ranged attackers with your best flyer.
Weapon
- Rocket Launcher — high burst damage plus long range. Lets you sit at safe range while your mount keeps you out of AoE attacks.
- Grenade Launcher and Assault Rifle are viable secondaries but neither hits as hard.
Target the head jewel
- Panthalus's weakpoint is the jewel on its head. Consistent hits to this spot deal significantly more damage. Aim there, not the body.
After the catch
Once Panthalus is captured, fast-travel to the Base of the World Tree at coordinates (-838, 689). The locked Terminal at the tree's base will now interact — the barrier drops and the entire World Tree region opens up.
From there, the next objective is the Sealed Calamity questline, which culminates in the Zenara & Astralym final boss fight.
Common problems
"I killed Panthalus by accident." If your damage overwhelmed the 1-HP failsafe (this can happen with very high burst weapons), quit to menu, reload your save, and re-summon with the Echoing Flute. The flute is not consumed on failure.
"My Pal Sphere missed." Panthalus is huge but so are the AoE attacks that push you around mid-throw. Get closer before throwing, or mount to a stationary hover-flyer to steady your aim.
"The quest marker isn't updating after catching." Head back to the Deserted Islet NPC first to complete the quest turn-in, THEN proceed to the World Tree Terminal. Some versions of the quest require this dialogue step.
